Why Is My Plant Leggy and Stretched?
Short answer
Legginess is almost always insufficient light. Move the plant closer to a window or add a grow light, then prune the stretched growth — it never re-compacts on its own.

A leggy plant has long bare stretches of stem with leaves spaced far apart, usually leaning noticeably in one direction. It is one of the easiest problems to diagnose, because there is essentially one cause.
It is the light
Plants have photoreceptors that measure both light quantity and quality. When light is insufficient, the plant redirects resources into stem elongation — a bet that growing taller will reach a better light source. The botanical term is etiolation.
The trade-off is that the plant spends its energy on stem rather than leaves, so you also get:
- Smaller new leaves than old ones
- Paler, thinner foliage
- Weak stems that flop
- Faded variegation and lost colour
- Stems leaning hard toward the window
Why your bright room is not bright
The most common objection is “but it is right by a window” or “the room is really light.” Two things are happening.
Your eyes lie. Human vision adapts across an enormous range, so a room that feels bright to you might be delivering a tiny fraction of outdoor light. A plant has no such adaptation.
Light falls off fast. Intensity drops roughly with the square of the distance from the window. A plant one metre from the glass may receive several times the light of one three metres back, even though both spots look similar.
A practical test: at midday, could you comfortably read a paperback there without turning a lamp on? If not, it is a low-light spot regardless of how it feels.
Fixing it, in order
1. Improve the light
- Move the plant closer to the window — a metre makes a real difference
- Choose an east or south-facing window where possible
- Clean the glass and open blinds fully
- Rotate the pot a quarter turn weekly so growth stays even
- Add an LED grow light on a timer for 10–12 hours a day if natural light is genuinely insufficient
Grow lights are the underrated answer. They are inexpensive to buy and run, and in a north-facing flat they are often the only thing that works.
2. Prune the stretched growth
This is the step people skip, and it is essential: stretched growth never re-compacts. The plant cannot shorten gaps it has already grown. Improving the light only affects what comes next.
For vining plants (pothos, philodendron, ivy): cut each long stem back by about a third, always just above a node. The plant branches from the cut, so one stem becomes two or three. Root the cuttings in water and plant them back into the bare centre of the pot.
For upright plants (rubber plant, fiddle leaf fig, dracaena): cut the main stem just above a node in spring. Two or three new branches typically emerge below the cut.
For succulents (echeveria, and most rosette types): behead it. Cut the rosette off with about an inch of stem, let the cut callus for three to five days, then set it on dry cactus mix to re-root. The old stump usually sprouts several offsets around the cut, so you gain plants.
3. Ease off the fertiliser
Excess nitrogen drives fast, soft, floppy growth. This is a particular trap with succulents, which need very little feeding and respond to a standard houseplant schedule with pale stretched growth.
Cut back to half strength, less frequently, and stop entirely in winter.
When it is not a problem
Some plants simply grow this way. Rubber plants, fiddle leaf figs, dracaenas and most palms naturally form a single upright stem with foliage at the top — that is their habit, not a complaint.
The distinction: on a naturally upright plant, the leaves at the top are large and well-coloured. On a light-starved plant, new leaves are smaller and paler than the old ones.
If you want a branched shape from a naturally single-stemmed plant, prune the growing tip in spring — that works regardless of light.
Preventing it
- Put high-light plants (succulents, ficus, citrus) in your brightest spots and accept that low-light corners need genuinely low-light species
- Rotate everything regularly
- Prune vining plants back each spring as routine maintenance, not as a rescue
- Add supplementary light in winter, when even a good window delivers a fraction of summer levels
Frequently asked questions
Will a stretched plant go back to normal if I move it into better light?
No. The elongated stem sections are permanent — a plant cannot shorten the gaps between leaves it has already grown. Better light only changes what happens next. To restore a compact shape you have to prune away the stretched growth, and the new growth that follows will come in tight if the light is now adequate.
What is etiolation?
Etiolation is the botanical term for the stretching response to insufficient light. The plant produces elongated, pale, weak stems as it invests everything into reaching a light source, at the expense of leaf size and colour. It is most visible in succulents, where a tight rosette turns into a tower, but it happens to every plant kept too far from a window.
How much light do houseplants actually need?
Far more than most homes provide. Light intensity falls off with the square of the distance — a spot three metres from a window can have less than a tenth the light of a spot right beside it, even though both look bright to your eyes, because your eyes adjust and a plant cannot. A useful rule: if you could not comfortably read a book there at midday without a lamp, it is a low-light spot.
Are grow lights worth it?
Yes, and they are cheaper than most people expect. A basic LED grow light running 10–12 hours a day on a timer costs very little to run and completely solves legginess in rooms with poor natural light. For succulents and high-light plants in northern climates it is often the difference between a plant that survives and one that actually looks good.
Other problems to rule out
Drooping or wilting leaves
Check the soil before watering. Dry soil means thirst — water and it recovers in hours. Wet soil means root rot, and watering again makes it worse.

Brown tips are usually low humidity or mineral build-up from tap water — not thirst. Switch to filtered water, raise humidity, and flush the pot to leach out salts.
