How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats

Fungus gnats are more nuisance than threat, but they multiply fast and they are stubborn if you only treat the flies you can see. The adults you swat are perhaps 10% of the population — the rest are eggs and larvae in the top inch of soil.
Break the cycle at both stages and they are gone in two to four weeks.
Why they are there
Fungus gnat larvae eat fungi and decaying organic matter in damp soil. They need moisture in the top inch or two to survive. A female lays up to 200 eggs, which hatch in about three days; larvae feed for two weeks, pupate, and emerge as adults that live about a week and immediately lay again.
That roughly three-week cycle is why a problem seems to vanish and return: you killed the adults, and the next generation hatched.
The presence of gnats is itself diagnostic — it usually means the soil is staying wetter than the plant needs.
The three-part fix
Do all three at once. Any one alone drags on for months.
1. Dry the surface
This is the most important step, and often sufficient on its own.
Let the top two inches of soil dry completely between waterings. Larvae desiccate and die; eggs fail to hatch.
Practically:
- Extend the interval between waterings for every affected plant
- Switch to bottom-watering so the surface stays dry while roots still drink
- Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers off the soil
- Add a half-inch layer of coarse sand, fine grit or horticultural pumice on top — it dries almost instantly and is a physical barrier against egg-laying
For plants that genuinely need consistent moisture, like calatheas and ferns, the sand-topping approach does most of the work.
2. Trap the adults
Yellow sticky traps laid flat on the soil surface or stuck on short skewers. Adults are strongly attracted to yellow and land on the traps rather than laying more eggs.
This does not solve the problem — it suppresses the breeding population while the soil dries, and gives you a clear read on whether numbers are falling.
A shallow dish of apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap also catches adults, though it works better on fruit flies than fungus gnats.
3. Kill the larvae with BTI
Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis is a soil bacterium that produces a toxin lethal to gnat and mosquito larvae, and harmless to plants, pets and people.
It is sold as mosquito bits or mosquito dunks. To use it:
- Steep a handful of mosquito bits in a gallon of water for 30 minutes.
- Strain, and use the water to water your plants normally.
- Repeat with every watering for three to four weeks.
This is the single most effective larval treatment available to home growers and is worth buying if drying alone is not working.
Partial measures
These come up constantly and are worth calibrating:
- Hydrogen peroxide drench (one part 3% peroxide to four parts water) kills larvae on contact and adds a little oxygen to the soil. It breaks down within minutes, so it does nothing about the next hatch. Useful as a knockdown, not a cure.
- Cinnamon on the soil surface has mild antifungal properties and reduces the fungal growth larvae feed on. A small help.
- Neem drench works but is slower and messier than BTI.
- Repotting into fresh soil feels decisive but usually fails, because larvae are already in the root ball and go with the plant.
Preventing the next infestation
- Quarantine new plants for two weeks away from your collection.
- Store potting mix sealed and dry. Open bags left damp in a shed are a common source.
- Keep soil surfaces clear of fallen leaves and debris.
- Let plants dry appropriately. Most houseplants want the top two inches dry before rewatering — and doing that consistently prevents fungus gnats as a side effect.
If gnats keep coming back to one particular plant despite everything, treat that as a signal about its watering routine rather than a pest problem. It is likely being watered more than it needs, and root rot may be developing under the surface.

Are fungus gnats harmful to plants?
The adults are harmless and simply annoying. The larvae feed mostly on decaying organic matter in the soil, but in heavy infestations they also chew fine root hairs, which stunts growth and hits seedlings and cuttings hardest. Established plants rarely suffer real damage — the bigger issue is that a gnat problem is usually telling you the soil is staying too wet.
How long does it take to get rid of fungus gnats?
About two to four weeks if you treat both stages. The life cycle runs roughly 17 to 21 days from egg to adult, so you have to keep the pressure on through at least one full generation. Sticky traps catch adults while drying the soil and applying BTI kills the larvae — doing only one of the two is why infestations drag on for months.
Does cinnamon or hydrogen peroxide kill fungus gnats?
Both help a little, neither is a complete answer. A 1:4 solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide to water kills larvae on contact when you drench the soil, but it breaks down within minutes so it does not stop the next hatch. Cinnamon has mild antifungal properties that reduce the fungal growth larvae feed on. Use them alongside drying the soil and BTI, not instead.
Will fungus gnats go away on their own?
Only if the conditions that created them change. As long as the topsoil stays damp, the population sustains itself indefinitely — each female lays up to 200 eggs. Letting the soil surface dry between waterings is usually enough to collapse the cycle on its own, but it has to be sustained for several weeks.
Other problems to rule out
Drooping or wilting leaves
Check the soil before watering. Dry soil means thirst — water and it recovers in hours. Wet soil means root rot, and watering again makes it worse.
